Mary Waithiegeni Chege (LLB, LLM, CP3P®)
Managing Partner

As founder and principal of EMSI & Associates, Mary leads her team based on over two decades of project and corporate finance experience in the energy and infrastructure sectors across sub- Saharan Africa.

Over the years, she has led and participated in multi-jurisdictional teams at every stage of project development ranging from project feasibility and due diligence investigations through to drafting and negotiation of key project and transaction agreements, financing agreements and security documentation.

With the huge deficit in the financing requirements for Africa’s infrastructure, Mary is increasingly focusing her practice on project finance and public private partnerships as delivery mechanisms for much needed infrastructure. She has served as a technical advisor to UN Habitat on revenue management and financing mechanisms for urban infrastructure in secondary cities.

Mary is ranked as a leading lawyer in the Energy & Projects Sector – Kenya by Chambers & Partners and is a Certified PPP Practitioner (CP3P®) and accredited trainer. She also serves as a guest lecturer at Strathmore University’s Law School and Business School in Nairobi, Kenya.

Passionate about the African continent, Mary is a frequent panelist and moderator at local and regional conferences on topics around energy, infrastructure and investing on the African continent. She is a founding Member of the African Network for Women in Infrastructure (ANWIn) of the African Union Commission and currently serves as a Non-Executive Director of Development Initiatives Poverty Research Limited and DI International Limited in the United Kingdom. She has previously served as a Member of the Taskforce on Re-Engineering and Transformation of Urban Development in Kenya where she chaired the Legal and Institutional Development Committee as well as an Independent Board Member and Chairperson of the Audit, Governance and Compliance Committee of the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority.
